Emerging
wireless technologies have created new market spaces in the drive
to make customer access ubiquitous. These new services bring fresh
marketing challenges that demand insight and perspective as well
as hard data, to formulate successful customer service strategies.
Although Wi-Fi has been at the
forefront of wireless broadband initiatives, the advent of WiMAX*
and mesh technologies signal a new horizon of emergent opportunities.
BroadGroup tracks and assesses
the onset of wireless broadband markets, collects and interprets
pricing, and monitors adoption and usage.
*WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability
for Microwave Access) also known as 802.16, is a set of emerging
wireless networking technologies that are being developed to cover
large areas up to a range of 48 kilometres and provide data-transfer
speeds up to 75 Mbps. WiMAX is an implementation of the emerging
IEEE 802.16 standard that uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
(OFDM) for optimisation of wireless data services. The first version
of the technology, 802.16a, is expected to be used for fixed-wireless
connections and future versions are planned to offer mobile access,
opening up the possibility of putting the technology in notebook
computers and cell phones.
